Membership: Requirements

In accordance with Cleveland SHRM's bylaws, individual membership in the Chapter is contingent upon the individual meeting the description of one of the membership categories below. Each membership is individual rather than corporate. Succession to or transfer of membership from one person to another is not permitted.

Regardless of the reason, a member whose membership lapses will be readmitted by qualifying for membership according to the membership classifications listed below.

Regular Membership: Regular Membership shall be limited to those individuals actively engaged in bona fide human resources administration, who devote at least 50% of their time to human resources, personnel or industrial relations functions.

Regular membership shall also comprise those individuals who devote at least 50% of their time advising, assisting or representing enterprises on human resources matters and shall include:

  • Faculty members at accredited colleges or universities who hold the rank of assistant, associate or professor in personnel, human resources or industrial relations;
  • HR Consultants;
  • HR attorneys,
  • HR agents who perform human resource functions, either of a temporary of permanent nature, for a fee
  • Individuals whose involvement in the field of human resource management in the estimation of the Board of Directors manifests a strong compatibility with Cleveland SHRM Regular Membership.

In Transition Membership: In Transition Membership shall include individuals that are currently not employed, but seeking employment, and whose last position would have otherwise qualified the individual for Regular Membership.  New members in this category shall pay full Regular Membership dues.  Renewing members shall pay ½ of Regular Membership dues.  In Transition Membership may not extend beyond two years.


Retiree Membership
: Retiree Membership is available to individuals that have retired from a role that qualified the individual for Regular Membership.


Human Resources Partner
: HR Partner Membership is available for individuals who do not qualify for Regular Membership, but for whom individuals in Human Resources are a primary client or network group, and these individuals would benefit from the opportunity of networking with Cleveland SHRM.


Student Membership
: Student Membership is available to individuals enrolled in at least 12 hours or equivalent in an undergraduate program supporting Human Resources or at least 6 hours or equivalent in a graduate program supporting Human Resources.  for students who are enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per term in a program supporting a degree in Human Resource Management or having graduated in the past 12 months from a qualified program supporting Human Resources.  Student members must not be eligible for any other membership category.

The Board strongly encourages all HR professionals to maintain concurrent membership in the national Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Information regarding SHRM membership may be found here.
