Total Rewards: Medical Cannabis Coverage Considerations for the Buckeye State
Date: Friday, April 20, 2018 (7:30-10:00 AM) at Corporate College East
The NE Ohio Chapter of ISCEBS, in collaboration with the Total Rewards Committee of CSHRM, is pleased to present the following educational session on medical cannabis in the workplace. The growing body of evidence to support the use of medical cannabis in certain conditions, the explosion in clinical trials globally, and changes to clinical practice guidelines means demand for coverage will continue to increase. As a greater number of states expand their medical cannabis programs and/or move into legalization of recreational cannabis use, there will be pressure to harmonize federal and state laws around cannabis which will enable reimbursement under plans more easily.
Today, plans in Ohio that are exploring any kind of medical cannabis coverage will need to build a state-specific approach and consider important legislative restrictions. This session will explore important coverage considerations when looking at medical cannabis under benefit plans, including considerations specific to our state.

CEO & Co-Founder
Cubic Health Inc.
Mike Sullivan is a Pharmacist who co-founded the only analytics company that operates in the health benefits industry in Canada. Based in Toronto, Cubic Health works on behalf of large plan sponsors with a focus on Plan Performance, Population Heath, Integrated Drug and Disability, & Predictive Analytics. Cubic also manages custom drug formularies and independently adjudicates and manages high-cost and specialty drug claims for its plan sponsor clients including claims for medical cannabis.
Given Canada’s Federal medical cannabis program that dates back to 2001, and pending legalization of recreational cannabis nationally in July 2018, Canadian plan sponsors have been required to address medical cannabis more urgently. This has resulted in more established, integrated coverage programs for medical cannabis under employee benefit plans with a focus on workplace safety.
As a result of Cubic’s leadership in managing medical cannabis claims and synthesis of the evolving evidence base, and Cubic’s independence, Mike has been invited to speak in the United States on the topic for groups including the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists, and Health Care Administrators Association.
Mike obtained his pharmacy degree from the University of Saskatchewan and his Master of Business Administration degree with a specialization in Finance from York University. Prior to co-founding Cubic in 2003, he worked in both the benefits consulting and pharmaceutical industries. He started his career as a community pharmacist.
