Cleveland SHRM Diversity and Inclusion Presents:

Session Title:
Disability Hiring: Let’s Work Together!!!

Date: Thursday, October 19, 2017

Program Objectives:

Smart businesses know that a diverse workforce drives economic growth, represents diverse consumer base, decreases turnover, and promotes inclusive workplace culture. 1 in 5 Americans have a disability and this population is often referred to as the “untapped workforce”. Cleveland has a higher percentage of residents with disabilities than any other major city in America. Companies that have instituted disability hiring initiatives have been able to tap into this large and valuable workforce that statistically stays in jobs longer, has better attendance, lowers medical costs, and increases overall productivity October happens to be National Disability Employment Awareness month which was established to educate, promote, and celebrate the value of this diverse workforce. Let’s work together with increasing our awareness, collaborative efforts, and enhancement of business engagement with this untapped workforce.

This session will begin with Mitch Morgan, VP of Inclusion and Diversity for Fifth Third Bank & Chapter President for Ohio Business Leadership Network. Mitch has a wealth of expertise in workforce initiatives targeting individuals with disabilities.  The second part of the session will feature a facilitated dialogue with a panel of representatives from several businesses who, as part of their companies’ strategic planning efforts, have implemented various recruitment and hiring models that target individuals with disabilities.

Participants will leave this session with a greater understanding of:

•How to incorporate disabilities into the diversity conversation

•Local and national workforce statistics related to hiring and retention of individuals with disabilities

•Various recruitment models currently being instituted within organizations

•The business perspective for employing individuals with disabilities

•Local and national resources to assist with tapping into this untapped workforce

This activity has been submitted for recertification credit through HRCI and SHRM.
